Somnoproxy Dreamachine

SOMNOPROXY DREAMACHINE LTD EDITION PRINT

We’ve produced a limited edition print in collaboration with Somerset House Studios. Inspired by our immersive audio installation, Somnoproxy, which featured in the autumn exhibition at Somerset House. “24/7: A wake-up call for our non-stop world”. Somnoproxy centres around a futuristic bedtime story written by Stuart Evers, about a conman who offers his services to sleep on behalf of wealthy executives who are too busy and stressed to sleep themselves. The narrative is read by actors Enzo Clienti and Kate Ashfield, with a sonic accompaniment we created with the Moog Sound Lab UK.

At the centre of the experience is a Dreamachine, a stroboscopic flicker device created by Brion Gysin and William S. Burroughs’ ‘systems adviser’ Ian Sommerville. It is “viewed” with the eyes closed; the pulsating light stimulates the optic nerve and alters the brain’s electrical oscillations. This edition composites a frozen moment of the Dreamachine spinning, with the static, graphic overprint of the outer cylinder’s die-cut pattern. It transfixes the potency of Gysin and Sommerville’s invention into a beautiful object.
